Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan Kansei is a 2D action and fighting game developed by NATSUME ATARI Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Games, released in Japan on August 30, 2012. It is a sequel to Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan Saisen, featuring similar gameplay and graphics. The creators claim to have improved the gameplay based on feedback received from the first game. Like the first game, the initial edition included a completely new engine and featured scenes from all three OVAs.

Technically, it’s a complete continuation of the previous installment, with Kansen essentially being the same game with an updated roster and some minor tweaks under the hood. This means two things: first, there’s no longer a need to get Saisen if you haven’t already, as there’s nothing in it that isn’t present in Kansen. Second, there’s no need to go over the basics in this review. You can check my old review for Saisen for the game details. This time, we’ll focus on the changes that Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan Kansen brings to the table.

Graphically, there’s nothing different. It’s the same engine, and you won’t notice anything different except for the new menu and characters. The same applies to the sound aspect of things (again, refer to the Saisen review for details).

Content-wise, there are many welcomed changes. The roster was already fitting for a fighting game in the previous installment, but now they’ve added several other games without removing any of the previously playable characters.

New additions include some quirky choices, like Okita Souji, who only appeared in the series during the flashback. There are also added characters from the Reflection OVA, such as Kenshin’s separated son Kenji and the teenage version of Yahiko. As expected, you need to unlock most characters first. If you have a save file from Saisen, some old hidden characters will automatically unlock, along with getting a certain amount for weapon upgrades.

First and foremost, aside from the famous characters like Kenshin and Saito, it’s pleasing to see fans being able to use secondary characters like Spear Legs and Iwanbou from the Juppongatana, and Prajna of Oniwabanshu, and even Shinsengumi’s Okita Souji. It’s unlikely for a fighting game to have 30 playable characters.

The game itself is categorized as a combo game. Combo games are only interesting when you can unleash and narrate, but the game’s speed is slow, and special moves are easy, so you can easily unleash without rushing. If you practice during the added training from the full version, you can create a high-powered combo that takes up 80% or more of most characters. Also, as you develop your group and practice it carefully, it’s interesting to see the strong behavior of the character and individual.

In the Swashbuckler Free Battles chapter, there’s a unique conversation in each character’s battle. And each one has different lines after winning. In other words, you can watch 30×30 conversations. You can enjoy non-original dream matches, and you can also watch very rare (or rather unimaginable) conversations like Master Hiko feeling disappointed with small fish like Kanyanagi and Raijuta.

Additionally, I feel that I’m special about the system. In addition to the familiar system of fighting games like distinguishing between high, medium, and low stages for attack techniques, guard canceling, throwing, etc., there’s also a unique system that affects the battlefield, such as Kamihaya no Koku and the transcendent state, which is an interesting point for a fighting game. It’s often considered as well.
