M.A.C.H. (Modified Air Combat Heroes) is an action and racing video game designed for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Developed by Kuju Ltd and published by Vivendi Games in 2007, the game is set in the year 2049, where vintage manned aircraft and decommissioned fighter jets compete in underground tournaments against unmanned drones.
M.A.C.H. offers more combat-oriented gameplay than typical racing games. Combat arenas in the career mode focus on achieving the highest number of kills on other planes in open areas. Each stage, including oil platforms, volcanoes, and open water, features small different zones for taking cover from incoming fire or searching for power-ups, making level selection somewhat strategic, even though there are only five unique arenas. These battles remain surprisingly intense even after the addition of the Baron later on.
Initially, all you need is missiles to rack up kills, but later, all planes are equipped with custom machine guns for this mode. Your role becomes more significant in ensuring you get almost double the kill rate that the AI opponents can manage. The balance of your power determines how long you can sustain the barrage of machine gun fire to kill an enemy plane before the weapon needs to cool down. If you manage to consecutively kill enough planes without dying, you receive an instant kill laser, essentially allowing you to widen the points gap without giving opponents a chance, undermining any attempts they make. These battles are genuinely challenging.
Welcome to the world of M.A.C.H. Modified Air Combat Heroes, where you climb the ranks by defeating rivals, unlocking parts, and customizing planes—180 configurations at the highest level across 11 planes—to improve speed and weaponry. Players will soar through the skies for intense aerial races and deadly air-to-air battles across a variety of environments, with the option to choose from multiple multiplayer play modes.
In 2049, world governments turned to unmanned drones for combat to save lives. In doing so, they decommissioned thousands of planes and their fighter pilots, ironically destroying the livelihoods of those they were trying to save. After years, these planes appeared on the black market and were sold to the highest bidders. It didn’t take long before an underground plane emerged, featuring former fighter pilots, smugglers, and wealthy enthusiasts piloting decommissioned fighter jets. In a competition of combat and escape, these pilots extensively modified their jets to outperform and outmaneuver the competition to win fame, glory, and wealth. Welcome to the world of M.A.C.H.

M.A.C.H. is an arcade-style racing game, so controlling it isn’t too difficult, right? The game controls well most of the time, but there are some tricky points. For example, to make sharp turns, you need to press both the X and Square buttons while also pressing the d-pad (or analog nub) in the direction you want to turn. Thanks to the narrow design of the PSP, pulling off those sharp turns can be challenging at times. If you want to launch a missile while turning, click the L button. Additionally, if the opponent’s missile is heading your way, you’ll need to click the Circle button to barrel roll away from its path. The control setup I just described is highly likely in M.A.C.H., so your hands may twist into uncomfortable claws before everything is said and done. The other control element worth noting is the afterburner, which requires you to double-click and then press the X button to increase speed. Hopefully, you won’t do this during a sharp turn, or else you’ll become intimately acquainted with a nearby wall.
M.A.C.H. has almost no story. The instruction manual says the game revolves around unemployed fighter pilots competing in underground races because they lost their jobs to robots (I’m not kidding), but it seems this doesn’t matter enough for the title to mention it. M.A.C.H. has three modes: Arcade, Career, and Challenge. In Arcade mode, the race is two button presses away, but you won’t unlock anything; it’s just a quick action.
In Career mode, you can choose the cup you’ll compete in (more are unlocked over time) and then select your aircraft. Your aircraft handles dangerous missions. As you accumulate money from winning events, you can customize your planes, something even Mario can’t do. However, M.A.C.H. isn’t Forza; you can only choose from a few types of parts, and there are some basic visual customizations, but that’s not the game’s focus. Once you’re in the cockpit, races become fast and enjoyable, although somewhat short. Between races, there are dogfights in open-level environments, and the winner is the one with the highest number of kills. If you fail a race, the dogfight is a good chance to catch up and/or vent your frustrations.
