WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is a professional wrestling video game developed by Yuke’s and published by THQ for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Wii, and Xbox 360. The game was first released on November 9, 2008, in North America. It is the tenth installment in the overall WWE video game series and the fifth match under the SmackDown vs. Raw name, named after WWE’s Raw and SmackDown brands.
The gameplay is solid, but there’s nothing particularly outstanding about it. The main controls use the PSP’s basic buttons, with on-screen prompts at the bottom of the screen guiding you in selecting characters, choosing game modes, and so on. When you enter a match, the controls are taught through a tutorial that can be turned off, but it can be somewhat annoying if you can’t find the right buttons. It can be a bit complex, but only a little. The match system is still not great, but it’s a step forward from the Smackdown vs Raw 2007 and 2008 arcade-style releases. The flow of the match is still not very smooth as desired, but it’s a step forward from the 2008 game. The gameplay is not as clear as desired, and the AI is good but not great, but unlike many features, it’s not lightweight; at least not in the matching style.

On paper, SVR 09 looks like it should be a leap towards wrestling game greatness. The title boasts over 60 wrestlers, 14 types of single matches, including the new Inferno option, a new story mode, better artificial intelligence, four-player custom gameplay for PSP, and a focus on tag teams. However, when you get into the punching, grappling, and deals that make up the game, the world begins to feel like a barren wasteland and becomes a bit blurry. In the end, we have a game that adds to last year’s outing in several ways but doesn’t live up to its potential. The menu editor is a welcome addition, Create-A-Finisher could be deeper but is still a first-rate effort, the Inferno Match is overdone but fun, and the Road to WrestleMania is one of the best story modes I’ve seen in a wrestling game in years. All of this is good, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m playing last year’s match when it comes to the nitty-gritty match mechanics. The entrances have been recycled, the match menu displayed, and the graphics aren’t a bright spot and aren’t interesting to look at with the ugly crowd and wrestlers’ sharp edges. The straight truth is that SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 on the PSP is a watered-down version of what’s on home consoles, and it shows. Not bad,
