Split/Second (also known as Split/Second: Velocity) is an arcade-style racing video game developed by Black Rock Studio and published by Disney Interactive Studios for the PlayStation Portable operating system in November 2010. In the game, players participate in a fictional reality television show consisting of a variety of events, each focusing on destructible environments remotely triggered by the drivers’ actions known as ‘Power Plays.’

At any time, each character may choose up to two sub-classes for functions in addition to their main class, and certain traits from that sub-class will carry over to the gameplay (such as the ability for a fighter to cast spells using the Mage or Priest sub-class). Actions during combat will change depending on the equipped weapons, and each type of the numerous weapons can only be equipped for a certain sub-class grouping of job classes. After building a gauge through combat actions, the character can execute a special attack. Various special attacks can be executed with different weapons.

In Split/Second, players participate in a fictional reality television show where contestants compete for money and fame. During races, players build a ‘Power Play’ gauge by performing thrilling actions like jumps and mid-air overtakes, and precise driving, such as drafting opponents and drifting. When players build their gauge, special events can be initiated, which create obstacles for other players, open temporary shortcuts, or change an entire section of the race track. These triggers are also activated by artificial intelligence opponents.

The intensity of available events to trigger varies based on how much of the player’s gauge is filled. Level 1 events become available when one or two-thirds of the three-part gauge is full, while Level 2 events can only be triggered on a full gauge. The locations of the events and the vehicles that will be affected are distinguished by blue icons for Level 1 Power Play and red icons for Level 2, and players must precisely time the action to hinder opponents as much as possible. The Power Play gauge is consumed by one-third upon triggering a Level 1 event, so the player must also decide whether to activate the less destructive Level 1 events as soon as they become available.
